Property Description: Located on approximately 15 acres of land on the north-east coast of Barbados not far away from the island’s central interior, Villa Nova was built in 1834 as a grand plantation house constructed of hand cut coral stone. In the spring of 2001 Villa Nova re-opened its doors to the public after a multi-million dollar restoration project aimed at preserving its colonial heritage. Before its recent closure it was a five star hotel and was classified in the luxury category of the Barbados Hotels and Tourism Association hotel ratings. At present the property comprises: · Approximately 15-acre plot of land· Great House (Plantation House)· Park House· Kitchen, Restaurant, Lobby and Administrative areas· Two (2) all-weather Tennis Courts · A freshwater Swimming Pool· Conference/ Boardroom Although the property is currently a resort, its history, location and architectural design lends itself to several uses, including a corporate retreat, wellness centre or a historic colonial home. Hotel Units The hillside hotel has views of the scenic east coast and green sugar cane fields. It comprises a total of 28 spacious guest rooms and suites each with its own terrace. Each has a view of either the pool or the gardens with table and chairs for in-room dining. Park House Park House is a two-storey building located on the northern side of the property. The facility is an annex to the plantation house and includes 12 of the total 28 guest rooms on the estate. Té SpaConstruction has started on eight (8) treatment “huts”, a reception area and two (2) steam rooms for the Té Spa. It is estimated that approximately 95% of construction is complete. Villa Nova Barbados, considered one of the last remaining great houses of Barbados, is a grand plantation house constructed in the Palladian style, built with hand-cut coral stone in 1834 and set in 15 walled acres of tropical forest and lush gardens. It sits atop the verdant hills showcasing views of the island’s picturesque east coast. Once the Caribbean home of Sir Anthony Eden, former British Prime Minister, it has hosted guests such as Sir Winston Churchill, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Noel Coward and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Villa Nova, located inland in the parish of St. John, 250 metres above sea level and not far from the island’s central interior is approximately a 20 minute drive from the Grantley Adams International Airport and just 10 minutes to the east coast. After a multi-million dollar refurbishment and renovation aimed at restoring its colonial heritage was completed, it reopened in April 2001 as a five-star luxury resort. The property was again renovated in 2007/ 2008. The acreage in its entirety comprises: | Sixteen (16) guest rooms | Library and music lounge | | Two (2) tennis courts | Kitchen & Restaurant | | Heated Pool | Car park | | Conference room | Fitness room | | Park House - twelve (12) rooms | Semi-constructed Té Spa | The plantation house and Park House currently occupy 10,785 and 3,244 total square feet of area respectively. The surrounding land is comprised of lush green spacious gardens and a tropical forest. The resort is approximately 12 kms northeast of the capital city of Bridgetown in the parish of St. John. Villa Nova is often described as the best place to go if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle and the crowds. It is an all-suite hotel, exquisitely decorated with antiques and works of art. Interior Designer Nina Campbell and a team of internationally renowned experts worked together to ensure the ambiance, décor and facilities would be unrivalled while maintaining the unique character and charm of the house. This led to Villa Nova winning the title, “Caribbean’s Leading Boutique Hotel” at the 2004 World Travel Awards. Most of the Resort’s facilities are located within the plantation house or within close proximity to the plantation house. These include the lobby, restaurant, 2 bars, lounge and administrative offices. The grounds surrounding Villa Nova feature mature gardens, a freshwater heated swimming pool (23 by 8 metres) and two floodlit tennis courts. Facilities at Villa Nova also include an air-conditioned fitness room, a conference/ meeting room and a library. As part of the estate there are walking paths with scenic ponds adding to the overall ambiance. The hotel also has a small car park catering to hotel management near the lobby entrance. The Resort, totaling twenty-eight (28) guest rooms between the plantation house and Park House, comprises the Terrace Room, one-bedroom suites and specialty rooms each named after historical guests and residents of the house. These are the Churchill Suite, the Eden Suite and the Haynes Suite. All of the rooms are individually designed and furnished to the impeccable standards of the houses’ nobility and tradition. Suites have king-size beds, sitting areas and large bathrooms with marble tiling and both Victorian claw-foot tubs and separate walk-in showers. All of the guest rooms are air-conditioned along with ceiling fans and window and door architraves. The room finishes include dark stained hardwood floors, approximately 3 metre high ceilings and mouldings, and decorated with antiques and artwork beds. The furniture is primarily of mahogany in keeping with the historic colonial style décor of a plantation home. The guest rooms are each appointed with private terraces, showcasing a view of either the pool or the gardens with table and chairs for in-room dining and steamer chairs for relaxation. Most of the rooms are complimented by CD music centres with a collection of discs and wide screen televisions. The resort offers optional dining areas in an al fresco terrace restaurant, an air-conditioned dining room and a salon privé. The following is a brief description of the food and beverage facilities. The Terrace at Villa NovaThe Terrace at Villa Nova restaurant is located on the ground floor of the main house almost adjacent to the Music Lounge, which hosts a grand piano. Upon opening it quickly established itself as one of the island’s premier fine dining experiences and has a seating capacity of approximately 50. Air-conditioned Dining Room (Nova Room)The air-conditioned dining room is located on the ground floor of the plantation house. This multi-functional facility can be used for private dining or as an additional meeting room. All doors to the room can be closed off providing complete privacy; additionally it has a seating capacity of approximately 30. Salon PrivéThe Salon Privé seats approximately 10 persons and is considered another more intimate alternative to dining. All doors can be closed off to this room, which features zebra print chairs and metallic wall paper. BarsThere are two (2) bars in total on the premises. One is located inside the plantation house within close proximity to The Terrace at Villa Nova, lounge and reception areas and the other is located beside the pool. The reception lounge and offices are located within the plantation house primarily on the ground floor. There are currently two offices located within the main reception area with additional offices located on the first floor of the plantation house. There are currently two all-weather floodlit tennis courts located on the grounds. There is also one gazebo on the grounds of the property where dining or private functions can be held. A small but fully equipped, air-conditioned fitness room is located in what is considered the West Wing, which is the addition made to the main house via the 2001 renovations. Currently there is a small Spa Room on the first floor of the main house near the conference room. Currently the eight (8) specialty treatment “huts” and two (2) steamer rooms are for the most part complete in structure and wiring with the final touches currently undone. The administrative area, which is also a separate “hut” requires further structural work. Flooring is majority wood flooring, with marble tiles in the bathrooms. All-weather “sandy” surfacing has been used on the tennis courts. Air-conditioning is in guest rooms, one dining room, conference room, administration block and some public areas; also naturally cooled via breezeways and louvered windows. Guest rooms also have ceiling fans. Emergency overhead water sprinklers, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and approximately 4 stand pipes (located on the grounds of the property). Laundry facilities are positioned on site within the plantation house and in close proximity to the guest rooms. Zoning is tourism/ commercial.
